Sweet Life Garden

January is the best month to sow tomato seeds indoors. We recycled our old planting containers and sowed two seeds in each cell, then covered them lightly with seed staring mixture. We are making sure that they are kept evenly moist. During the day we set them outside in the warm sun. This year we wanted to try a few heirloom varieties, we planted Amy's Sugar Gem and Eva Purple Ball, both were ordered from http://www.southernexposure.com/. After the first set of true leaves appear, we will transplant the tomatoes into 4-inch pots. After danger of frost has past, usually around Feb. 15, the plants will be gently transplanted to the outside garden boxes. This will give us a head start on our tomatoes. It's always exciting to try varieties you can't find at the local nurseries. In the next couple of weeks we will be sewing peppers and eggplant seeds too.
