Good Enough to Eat

This morning I harvested my kale to make room for the incoming tomatoes and peppers. When harvesting my "greens", I usually have a couple of buckets of water nearby. I like to toss my leafy greens in one bucket as I move through the garden. I use the other bucket  to re-wash and shake the earth and the little bugs from the leaves. If I'm picking a small amount for a meal, I fill my kitchen sink with water and let the leaves absorb the water or place them in a vase. This takes away the bitterness that you sometimes have with lettuce and kale. The colors and textures of this kale look as beautiful as any bouquet of flowers I might have sitting on my kitchen table, only these are good enough to eat!

Oh Jill! This looks just beautiful. Thank you to for the tip...I did not know that about soaking them in water.

Your kale looks wonderful. I have had problems growing leafy greens because snails and slugs love them too. Do you protect yours at all?

Caroline, thankyou. Yep, try it and let me know how it works for you.
Masha, I usually put a pot or two around the garden and hope the snails gather there. You can try the beer method too. But really, I have more trouble with birds!
And Anonymous, contact me, I have a bit of lettuce left.
Happy planting girls!

My lettuce and kale are still growing, but are almost there! I will send you a picture of my little green garden that you set up.
